Introduction: Small diameter, high aspect ratio polymer structures can be produced using standard MEMS processes. Using liquid polymer and a master template we are able to create micro and nano hairs in a largely parallel and inexpensive process.
Approach: The team is currently developing and testing methods for the production of polymer microhairs. Using standard MEMS technology and commonly available equipment, arrays of angled fibers can be constructed quickly. The fibers can be fabricated with an angle to the surface that replicates the gecko structure, enabling low preload attachment.
Benefits: The lithography process is straightforward once the techniques are perfected so the process is very rapid. We are able to fabricate, image and test a run of samples in one day, so the iteration cycle is reasonably short. This means that optimization occurs at a fast pace.
